Climb safe, climb kind

Rules and Etiquette

Please follow our guidelines below for a safer and friendlier environment for yourself and your fellow humans.

Climbing orientation is extremely important and thus please ask a member of staff if you would like guidance about any of the following points.

Safety first

Bouldering Safety Rules

Improper conduct at the climbing wall can cause injury to you and to others. Follow the guidelines below to make sure that everyone is able to have a good time.

  1. Stay outside of fall zones

A fall zone is the 8-10ft area around someone currently climbing where they could potentially fall. Climbers are not stationary, and fall zones are always changing.

  2. Watch out for falling climbers

Don't walk through an active fall zone. Once a climber is climbing, they cannot be expected to be aware of what's below them. Walk around the fall zone or wait for them to finish.

  3. Give each other space

Do not climb above or below others. It will end badly. Wait or ask them to move politely.

  4. Tell others if they are in a fall zone

If you notice someone walking inside your fall zone or someone else's, notify them to move out of it immediately.

  5. Keep the crash pads clear

Leaving objects on the crash pads can lead to injury and damage. Make sure that the area underneath is clear from items (and people) before starting a climb.

  6. Fall safely

Falling is inevitable. Try to fall safely. Like a ninja by distributing weight through your entire body and not like a gymnast landing on their feet.

  7. Notify staff of spinners, danger and feedback

    Notify staff if:

    1. there are any loose holds
    2. climbs have dangerous moves or falls likely to end in injury
    3. you see dangerous activity
    4. you have feedback
Be a good wall-mate

Centre Etiquette

Everyone wants to have a good time. Please respect the various ways that people strive towards this.

  1. Give right of way

Whoever started climbing first has right of way. Please wait to be outside their fall zone or for them to finish before starting.

  2. Take turns on the wall

Others might want to climb in the same area as you and/or your group. Please take turns and don't hog the wall all to yourselves.

  3. Don't beta spray

Beta is information about how a climb climbs. It's natural to want to share your knowledge. But many people enjoy the process of problem solving required to complete a climb. Don't deny them this joy, unless they want you to.

  4. Don't leave tick marks on problems

Tick marks are used to remind climbers of specific beta. Leaving it is the same as silently spraying beta. Please brush them off when you are finished with a problem.

  5. Don't spill excess chalk

Avoid tossing chalk bags. Similarly try to keep your hands in the chalk bag when chalking up. Chalk in the air isn't great for anyone's lungs. Chalk on the floor has to be cleaned up.

  6. Tidy equipment after use

Whether using a stick brush, yoga mats or weights, please return equipment to their rightful place - leave it as you found it!

  7. Don't wear rock shoes to the toilet

Others don't want to grab where your feet have been, especially when your shoes have residue from restroom floors!
